A Beginner's Guide to Publishing: The Complete Process from Submission to Publication

Many authors finish their manuscripts but are unsure how to publish formally. In China, legitimate publishing falls into three main models: traditional publishing, co-publishing, and self-publishing. These options differ significantly in target audience, cost, and rights. This guide outlines the complete process to help first-time authors choose the right path wisely.

The first step to formal publication is refining the complete manuscript and preparing submission materials: a book synopsis, full table of contents, 3000–5000 words of high-quality sample chapters, and an author biography. Avoid mass submissions; instead, target publishers whose scope aligns with your topic to increase approval chances. Once your manuscript is submitted and the publishing plan is confirmed, you can sign the contract and begin production. All legitimate books must undergo the publisher's "three reviews and three proofreadings," obtain an ISBN, and receive CIP data—these are essential for legal market release. Below, we outline three mainstream publishing methods:

I. Standard Publishing

Wenlan Book Society covers all publication costs at no expense to the author. After evaluating the manuscript and confirming its market potential, Wenlan Book Society is pleased to invest in its publication. Once published, the book will be available across major online platforms and physical retail channels. Authors receive royalties as stipulated in the agreement.

Pros: Zero upfront investment, professional distribution, high industry recognition. Cons: Extremely high entry barrier; new authors without a following and topics lacking commercial potential often fail the proposal review. Best suited for established writers, industry experts, creators with existing audiences, mass-market themes, and projects with stable market expectations.

2. Co-Publishing

The manuscript has potential, though market prospects are uncertain. Wenlan Book House will share costs and sales revenue with the author. The author covers part of the publishing expenses, while the publisher provides ISBNs, editorial review, and distribution resources. The book enters normal market circulation, and profits are shared according to the agreement.

Pros: Lower entry barrier than subsidized publishing with access to public distribution channels. Cons: Requires upfront investment; carefully review the revenue-sharing terms in the contract. Ideal for new authors with strong manuscripts and an existing readership who cannot yet secure subsidized publishing deals.

3. Self-Publishing

The author covers all costs, including editorial review, typesetting, ISBN acquisition, and printing. The publisher is responsible solely for content compliance review and processing official publication procedures. Copyright remains with the author. The author independently determines print run, cover design, and total quantity printed. Public distribution may be agreed upon by both parties.

Pros: moderate entry barrier, predictable timeline, high creative control. Cons: limited distribution resources; most sales require author-driven promotion. Ideal for academic monographs, personal anthologies, memoirs, books for professional certification, niche topics, and works intended for limited circulation.

After selecting the publishing model and signing a formal contract, proceed with the standardized workflow: collaborate with editors for three rounds of review and proofreading → cover and interior layout design → apply for ISBN and CIP data with the publisher → confirm final version → print at the facility. Once printing is complete and sample copies are received, distribute the book to e-commerce platforms and physical bookstores for public release.

Final reminder for all new authors: Beware of fake ISBNs and low-price traps. Always sign with a licensed, legitimate publisher. Ensure the contract clearly specifies fees, copyright terms, print run, distribution rights, and revenue settlement to protect your legal rights.
